Nintendo turns Game Crazy stores into Wii Sports Resorts

If you're looking to try out Wii Sports Resort just a bit early, check out your local Game Crazy next weekend. The retailer will host a sneak preview event for the MotionPlus minigame collection on Saturday, July 25, just one day before the North American launch of the game. From 10am to 8pm that day, Game Crazy visitors will get to try out Resort, and also enter to win one of two $1,500 gift cards "toward a real-life resort vacation." The following day, Game Crazy will offer an extra 20 percent on games traded in toward the purchase of Resort, which suggests that they do expect people to buy some and not just play it in the store all day Saturday.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

RedOctane unveils Guitar Hero 5 drums

We're guessing that of all the tiny plastic instruments you've collected in your den, drum sets are still the most uncommon. Therefore, you may be able to scrounge up a smidgen of enthusiasm for the image above, which depicts the drum peripheral that will come bundled with select versions of Guitar Hero 5 when the game launches this September. This revelation brings up two interesting points -- first, RedOctane is viciously taking the wind out of the sails of Logitech, who revealed its own cymbal-equipped drum peripheral yesterday at an unwelcoming price point of $229. Second, it looks like the leaked pictures and list of features we received earlier in the month were legit -- and as you surely know, every time a leak is proven legitimate, an angel gets its wings.[Via Engadget]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Wii System Update 4.1 is now live

But it's not a particularly exciting one, we're afraid. Oh sure, it might play havoc with your homebrewing, but you're not going to see any differences in how the system works. In Japan, 4.1 fixed a bug in Wii Sports Resort, apparently, so we're betting it's the same case here.So go on, update. Or don't. Up to you. We just wanted to temper your excitement when you saw that telltale blue glow. [Image: Wlodi]Permalink | Email this | Comments

Create co-op levels by playing in Lego Indiana Jones 2

It seems that user-generated content has usurped co-op as the hot new "gotta have it" feature. Lego Indiana Jones has found a way to bridge the gap between the two features (impressive, considering his stubby legs), allowing two players to create levels simultaneously (a la LittleBigPlanet) in his upcoming sequel, subtitled The Adventure Continues. Good news: The feature will appear on Wii as well as 360 and PS3. Bad news: They won't be sharable on any console, which just seems silly. Our man Jem Alexander reports from the Develop conference that you'll be able to create levels by playing, similar to what we saw in Modnation Racers during E3. We have no clue how that'll work, but we'd let Mola Ram tear our hearts out to learn more.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Hacker claims The Conduit 'virtually unprotected,' easy to foil

A hacker by the name of "hetoan2" claims that it is relatively simple to alter variables in High Voltage's Wii FPS, The Conduit, allowing cheaters to attain infinite ammo, health, invisibility from radar, and other beneficial but unfair advantages -- even online. You can see some of the hacks in action in a video on hetoan2's site."Everything is virtually unprotected," hetoan2 discovered when he dumped the game's data and opened it up in a remote debugging program. "All values can be edited fairly easily, and there's virtually no sign of an attempt at hiding values, fixing bugs, or preventing online hackers." hetoan2 said that hacking the online version is as easy as hacking the offline version, because the code is completely identical. "The only difference is in the online mode the game sends the variables in real-time to their server."hetoan2 released some patch codes for The Conduit, but initially altered them to corrupt the save files of anyone using them. Now, he told The Wiire, he's working with High Voltage to identify cheaters, whose MAC addresses are currently being sent to Nintendo for banning.

Nintendo Channel updated in Japan

The Nintendo Channel received an update today, with the new version in available in Japan's Wii Shop offering a new interface and a few refined features for the demo download/trailer streaming channel. Andriasang offered a translated list of the changes. Users can now select standard or high quality for videos, in a setting that is decided upon the first startup of the channel. Users can also make a "favorites list" of games in which they're interested. It is also possible to see more detailed records of playtime for games on your list. User rankings for games offer detailed information, like determining how much fun a game would be for one person vs. multiple gamers. The interface tweaks, however, are more significant than they might sound. Searching has been improved, allowing users to find games based on title, genre, or publisher, and each game's information is easily accessible from any video or page about that game. The DS download service is also more centrally located.Right now, the update is just for Japan, but it should make its way worldwide eventually!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Shorts DS game draws our attention

Normally, a DS game based on a kids' movie wouldn't attract our notice -- they're as common as rocks, and tend to be less fun to play with. But the DS game based on Robert Rodriguez's Shorts, a movie about a neighborhood of kids who find some kind of wish-granting rock, appropriates one of our favorite new trends in side-scrolling games: drawing platforms.Kirby Canvas Curse started it, but in the last year there has been an explosion of games that mix traditional platforming with user-created platforms. The Chase: Felix Meets Felicity did it, and the upcoming Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter, MarkerMan Adventures (also published by Shorts publisher Majesco), and, outside of the DS, Crayon Physics, Drawn to Life on Wii, Max and the Magic Marker on WiiWare, and Trine allow players to make platforms by drawing shapes. And, as it turns out, we are extremely receptive to this idea, even when it is in a game in which you control a character named Loogie. See the trailer after the break.

Famitsu hands Dragon Quest IX a 40

Famitsu has given Dragon Quest IX a perfect 40/40 score in its review. According to Kotaku, the reviewers lauded DQIX's "ground breaking" multiplayer and its music, and called the storyline "easy to follow and straightforward, but also with moving scenes as well."While it's kind of a running joke that Famitsu basically rubber-stamps effusive reviews for Square Enix titles, we were surprised to discover that this game is actually the first Dragon Quest to receive a perfect 40, and is one of only ten 40 scores awarded. Of course, Dragon Quests III, VII, and VIII weren't far off with their 39 ratings.Kotaku also notes that the Amazon Japan reviews tend ... not to be as positive, though they apparently center around complaints about the Sandy character, an annoying ganguro fairy who has already inspired a "Die Sandy " Flash game.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
