Atlus porting Yggdra Union spinoff to DS

Most handheld strategy fans probably know about three "Dept. Heaven" games from Sting: Yggdra Union, Riviera, and the recent Knights in the Nightmare. However, there was another game in the series, called Yggdra Unison: Beat Out Our Obstacle, that was only released on phones in Japan. Now, Atlus has announced that it is releasing Yggdra Unison on the DS in Japan this December.According to 1UP, the spinoff title is a real-time strategy game with a "mixture of Western-style unit deployment and Japan-style RPG tactics," in which eleven armies fight to claim territory. It features the same card system found in Yggdra Union. Since the thing was just announced just now there's no word on localization, but Atlus has released all the other the Yggdra games here so far.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Review: Wii Sports Resort

Upon my initial skydive into Wii Sports Resort, I expected the game wouldn't wow me much. I'd seen it during various stages of its life and played it many times. Now that I had the final product, I expected it would hold little in the way of surprise. But as I started unlocking games and playing more, I found myself losing track of time. Many of us know that a great game can just suck you in and you can easily lose hours mining it for all of its glorious, fun riches. Wii Sports Resort was no different for me.

DSi dipping its toes into 10,000 lakes

Nintendo will be on hand at the 10,000 Lakes Festival in Minnesota this year to promote the DSi, with a pimped out tour bus we're sure Xzibit had a hand in designing. The festival, during which Nintendo will show off the capabilities of the DSi to patrons, lasts from July 22 to July 25 and takes place at the Soo Pass Ranch in Detroit Lakes. It's odd, because Nintendo makes no mention of letting folks play any games, so we guess attendees will just have the handheld's camera and its sound-messer-upper thingy to toy around with. For full festival details, head past the break.

Little King's Story sequel could have multiplayer

Yoshio Kimura, producer on Little King's Story, originally planned to include multiplayer in the strategy title, according to an interview with 411mania. "This game used to have a 2-player mode," he explained, "but we couldn't make the QA and debug in time, so we had to take it out. And this is one of the things that I really wanted to have."If setting competing armies of townspeople against one another, or collaborating to expand your shared kingdom, sounds great to you (like it does to us), you know how you can make your voice heard. "But if Little King's Story does well and a lot of people get to play it and if I have a chance to make a sequel, that's definitely something I want to implement."Aside from gameplay-focused matters, Kimura had a lot to say in this interview. Check it out for discussion of the character designs and how, uh, a talking squirrel inspired him to create the game.[Via GoNintendo] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey is a first-person RPG for DS

As usual, a new game countdown site was beaten by leaked Famitsu scans. We already knew that Atlus's new game was called Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey from information found on the site itself. New scans reveal that Strange Journey is a new first-person RPG (like Etrian Odyssey) for DS.The game, which uses some demon art from Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor for some of its three hundred plus demons, follows explorers of a new demon-filled dimension that has opened up in the South Pole. Players wear upgradable "Demonica Suits" like the one above, which is kind of awesome. The new game will be out in Japan on October 8.[Via NeoGAF]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Need for Speed Nitro boosts into stores Nov. 17

EA is ready to take Need for Speed Nitro out of the garage and onto the road on November 17th. The Wii- and DS-exclusive title is designed to offer "fun and intense competition for every type of gamer." This wouldn't be the first time a more casual approach reinvigorated a franchise.Nitro, like upcoming scarefest Dead Space Extraction, is part of EA's ongoing effort to establish some big hits on Nintendo's console. Other titles from the test lab, like EA Sports Active and the Tiger Woods 10, have already proven to be quite successful. Let's see if EA can keep up the Wii streak!

Iron Man 2's story will go beyond the plot of the movie

We'll be seeing more of Sega's follow-up to the poorly received 2008 super hero title Iron Man during the company's Comic-Con 2009 presentation -- but a press release just dropped some early details for the metal-suited sequel. Most intriguingly, the presser reveals that Iron Man 2 won't just follow the plot of the upcoming film, but will include a bit of inspiration from the comics as well. (We call this "getting the Spider-Man treatment.")Other interesting tidbits: The game's story will be penned by Invincible Iron Man and Uncanny X-Men writer Matt Fraction (and his loyal sidekick, Dave Percentile!), and will feature completely revamped controls. Hopefully this time around, Tony Stark's movement controls won't make it feel like he's drunk all the time. Oh! Ooooh. This is awkward.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Band Hero trailer released, unsexy people not allowed to play

For a while now, we've been asking ourselves "How different can Band Hero really be from Guitar Hero?" With today's release of the first trailer for the game, we have more answers than simply "Uh, the word 'guitar' has been replaced by 'band'." Specifically, the video lets us know that the game will feature a decidedly pop rock packed song lineup, to, y'know, make it more appealing to the mainstream ('cause Guitar Hero's soundtrack is so elitist). It's also clear that, in addition to guitar, bass, drum and microphone peripherals, you'll be required to suit up at GAP before playing. Oh, and be a model. Will the specialized peripherals never end?MSN Music's article on the game also mentions that the game disc will house 65 tracks (a partial list can be found after the break) and that DLC for Guitar Hero World Tour will be compatible with the game. Due for release this November on all consoles and DS, the game will also make use of the drop-in, drop-out gameplay feature found in Guitar Hero 5. Just remember: This totally isn't Guitar Hero. The name says so.[Via Giant Bomb]

Come, adore Professor Layton & the Eternal Diva trailer

Despite what Professor Layton would have you believe, every puzzle does not, necessarily, have an answer. For instance, if we were to ask you how much we want to watch the Professor Layton movie advertised by the trailer after the break, and you would attempt to answer with any of the many English words you have learned since birth, you would fall short of capturing our enthusiasm. No, we would have to invent an entirely new word for our adoration, say ... blujargin, or krunksable, and that would hardly be fair to the guesser, would it?[Via Siliconera]

Unlock items in Guitar Hero 5 through song 'challenges'

The neat features in Activision and Neversoft's Guitar Hero 5 -- that's the next full-band installment in the franchise, if you'll remember -- keep on piling up. The latest addition is what Neversoft calls "challenges." Sure, the name lacks creativity, but the feature itself is ingenious -- each song contains an additional goal that, when completed, unlocks new items for your faux-rocker.For instance, the end of David Bowie's "Fame" contains the titular word 24 times in a row, starting at an inhumanly high pitch and then descendng. If you hit five of the "fames," you unlock the gold challenge record, 20 "fames" nets you a platinum challenge record, and hitting all 24 "fames" gives you the diamond challenge record. Also, if you can make it through all of Rammstein's "Du Hast" without tearing your ears off, you get a multi-diamond challenge record.Okay, that last one was fake, but for more real song-specific challenges, Destructoid's got a huge list of examples.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
