WayForward's Mighty Flip Champs out tomorrow

WayForward -- creator of the upcoming A Boy and His Blob -- has announced that its new puzzle game, Mighty Flip Champs, will release for DSiWare this week. The game has players guiding the main character, Alta, through a series of mazes, which can be flipped like pages from one screen to the other. We still haven't seen the game in action, but given WayForward's pedigree, we're hoping for good things. Mighty Flip Champs will be available June 1 for 800 points.Permalink | Email this | Comments

These are the artists rocking out in Guitar Hero 5

When Activision announced Guitar Hero 5, we knew little more than the game would include some notes, and possibly a popular ditty or two. Now, we know all sorts of stuff, like the proposed "Band Moments" and the game's release date (9/1/09). But, we still haven't seen anything on what we've all wanted to know: The included artists. Now, we're happy to report that would-be rockers and rockettes now have a definitive list of talent featured in Activision's latest cash generator music rhythm game. And, it's staggering. So much so that we were forced to place the info past the break, for fear of an avalanche on the front page.

Phantom Brave pushed out to August for Japanese voices

Brace yourselves. The upcoming port of Phantom Brave won't possess Wii consoles in June as expected. Now, assuming you survived that Prinny Bomb, NIS America says in its press release (PDF link) that the delay will allow the niche publisher to put the oft-requested Japanese voice-over track back into the game. It's a gift, however, that requires some "extra programming and debugging," and players looking forward to the moody strategy game will now have to wait until August 4 to get their grinding fix.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Screens, video from LOTR: Aragorn's Quest are just adorable

Look at him! Couldn't you just eat the little guy up with a spoon? We're getting our first looks at screens and video (check after the break) from family-friendly Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's Quest, and they're just precious. If you think Lil' Aragorn is cute, wait until you see the kiddy-fied hobbits. They're like squishable, baby-shaped teddy bears. On a completely unrelated note, do you think we could crack open J.R.R. Tolkien's coffin and use his spinning corpse to power a small generator? Just curious.

Once the most feared warriors in all Japan, Ninjas have been made incredibly cute and cuddly just by shrinking them down. Yes folks, it's Mini Ninjas. Tiny little ninjas that can weave magic spells, possess animals and defeat evil. While utterly unlikely to instill fear into the hearts of rival feudal lords, they sure do make an adorable subject for a game. We've finally gotten to play the game, which has been veiled in shadowy secrecy since its January announcement. You'll find our impressions, new details, videos and an extremely versatile hat beyond the break.

Dead Space Extraction gets viral with pre-E3 video

EA has released a little Dead Space Extraction teaser just prior to the game's big coming out party at E3 next week. The on-rails Wii shooter will have players blasting Necromorph limbs on Aegis VII, just prior to the events of Dead Space. The game will release in September, but we expect to have some hands-on time with the game and its co-op gameplay next week.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Volition: Saints Row, Red Faction Wii games a 'possibility'

When playing Saints Row or Red Faction, did you ever wish you could smash up buildings or conduct drive-by shootings with a porn star while waggling a Wiimote? Even if you answered "no" to that question, developer Volition says it may one day be possible. During the Red Faction: Guerrilla launch event in New York City last night (held at the red planet-themed tourist trap/night club known as Mars 2112), we asked senior associate producer Jeff Carroll if the THQ-owned studio ever considered making Wii versions of their popular franchises. "Though [THQ] may do Wii versions of [our games] in the future, Volition won't be doing them -- at least for the next year or so," Carroll said. "We actually talked about whether we were going to become a partial Wii developer," he explained. "Then we talked it over with THQ and they had enough studios that were going to be Wii-specific. But we really wanted to focus on the technological advances [in console development], especially for Red Faction Guerrilla." When asked if these Wii titles were in the works, he replied that he didn't know but that they were "within the realm of possibility." The real question is: Will Gary Busey be involved? For insanity's sake, we hope so.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Super Mario Kart races onto Japan's Virtual Console next month

The lineup of Virtual Console games heading to Japan next month is fairly light. But we suspect that won't matter at all because it includes Super Mario Kart. Super Mario Kart plus any quantity of other games seems like a nice month! Oh, especially since it also includes Final Fantasy II, which, unfortunately, we don't expect to see on our own Virtual Console.Other games include another Famicom entry in the Jake Hunter series, adorable Wagyan Land and Mappy sequels from Namco, and the original arcade versions of Altered Beast (!) and Golden Axe (!!).Famicom:

  • Tantei Jinguuji Saburo: Toki no Sugiyuki Mama Ni
  • Final Fantasy II

Super Famicom:

  • Super Wagyan Land (out June 2)
  • Super Mario Kart

Virtual Console Arcade

  • Altered Beast (out June 2)
  • Golden Axe
  • Hopping Mappy (out June 2)

Square Enix announces Front Mission Evolved, NIER

Square Enix's E3 lineup features two surprises, in addition to the expected Final Fantasy stuff: Front Mission Evolved and NIER. While we may have suspected that some kind of Front Mission game was coming, we wouldn't have guessed that it would be a third-person shooter instead of a strategy game, nor that it would be developed by a Western company (Silent Hill: Homecoming's Double Helix Games, specifically). The E3 lineup press release highlights SE's efforts to become a more "global" company, and it hardly gets more "global" than handing one of its existing IPs over to a Western developer to be made into a PS3/Xbox/PC shooter.NIER is a new PS3/360 action game developed by Bullet Witch/Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles maker cavia. Players control NIER, who fights in a "crumbling world" to find a cure for his daughter, who is infected with the "Black Scrawl virus."The announcement also provided a firm release date for DISSIDIA Final Fantasy and its PSP bundle: August 25. The first episode of the WiiWare Final Fantasy IV: The After Years was also dated -- for this Monday! See the whole announced lineup in our gallery.

DJ Hero info-splosion: Gameplay footage, platforms, additional instrument support revealed

Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers "Bustin' Loose" vs The Zombies "Time of the Season" (DJ Shadow Mix) The official DJ Hero website is now online and, lo and behold, contains actual gameplay videos. The videos confirm that, yes, the setup is very similar to the music games we've come to know and love. The first video, above, shows off a song played at medium difficulty. A video of easy difficulty can be found after the break. Unfortunately, the videos still don't quite make it clear exactly what players will be doing with the controller. Don't worry too much though -- we're sure everything will be cleared up at E3 next week. Also revealed by the website are details surrounding some of the game modes. Three modes are mentioned: DJ vs. DJ, DJ + DJ and DJ + Guitar. In addition to guitar controllers, the game is also said to support microphones. Exactly how all this will work is anybody's guess. Finally, the site finally lists platforms for the game via the pre-order page. Unsurprisingly, DJ Hero will be available on PS3, PS2, Xbox 360 and Wii.[Thanks, Ian]
