Wii stopped reading disks

Has anyone else had this happen? All of a sudden, my Wii quit reading disks. I get a black screen telling me to remove the disk, turn off the Wii and follow the Users Manual. Sometimes I get the disk is not readable message. All it tells me to do is unplug the unit for five minutes and try again. This worked, but then it stopped again. And now I can't get it to read at all. It sounds like it's trying to read, but without success.

Any ideas?

Mine did the same thing. The disc drive is damaged. I sent mine in and got it back and it still does it so I'll have to send it in again. Nintendo will have to replace the disc drive.

Was it under warranty or do you know how much it will cost? I am not under warranty.

Mine was under warranty and it was all free. This might help:

As was the case with my damaged DS, they don't really care about Warranty. I called in, and they never once asked about the warranty. When we told them we had it, they just said it doesn't really matter that much to them. I'm not sure if that's the case with the Wii, though.

My friend said he had this problem, he said it was because he used the same disc for so long that his Wii just stopped reading it!! I don't think that was his problem, but he said it only did it that once & it hasn't done it since!!

This happened to my GBA SP. It would no longer read GBA games but it read GBC games fine. I sent it in without a warranty and they fixed it and sent it back to me free. I just needed to keep the box. I do believe the warranty is only there if the Wii breaks with you doing anything out of line to it.

Besides, Nintendo owes us for not making the system with the core gamers in mind.

Cheers :)

Thanks for the feedback. Just talked to someone that works at Sam's Club and he had found out that Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft will manufacture systems quickly knowing that they will have issues 1 to 2 years down the road. That's why they are not too worried about warranties.

I'll let you know what happens when I get mine fixed.

Sorry for the late reply, but I did get my Wii back. It cost me $75 to repair and to ship to Nintendo of America + $7.50 shipping back to me for a total of $82.50.

They replaced the "Disc Drive Mechanism" and they cleaned, tested, and inspected all components.

Total time without the Wii was about 2 weeks, but at least it is fixed and I didn't have to buy a new one.
