It's a mad, MadWorld blooper reel

Make no mistake, MadWorld is one of the most violent games we've ever seen but it's all wrapped up into a big joke. It's over the top, insane and pretty hilarious. Some of that hilarity is thanks to the one-two commentary punch of Greg Proops (Whose Line is It, Anyway?) and John DiMaggio (Bender from Futurama, among other things). Unfortunately, the latest trailer for MadWorld doesn't include Proops & DiMaggio but a pair of actors trying desperately to pretend to be hilarious. Maybe we're being overly harsh but you be the judge, check out the trailer after the break.

Nintendo's next step may be into the playpen

A patent filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office today tells the tale of an edutainment-laden future for Nintendo, reports Siliconera. According to the patent, the console maker's next property (properties?) may feature a mess of different learning tools aimed at young children, defined in the patent as, "toddlers and pre-kindergartners, and/or people with disabilities." The various ideas presented within the patent range from matching animal sounds with animal pictures to lessons in daily chores to building your first laser gun. Alright -- fine -- we made up that last one.Littered throughout the images included with the patent are a couple of familiar Nintendo characters (Mario and Pikachu), though, according to Siliconera, the report specifically mentions "television and/or licensed cartoon characters like Pikachu, Dora the Explorer, and Bob the Builder." Though this patent may have been filed, we want to remind you that none of these plans are by any means final and for all anyone knows, could be nothing more than what they are now -- ideas. One thing is for sure, no matter what happens, we all now know that Nintendo believes children to wear totally badass future shoes. Check out the gallery below for an extensive visual tour of what may very well be the next step Nintendo takes.

Survey proposes Netflix service for Wii

Click to see the full-size screen capture.
Netflix may be looking to expanding their service beyond Xbox 360. According to a consumer survey mailed to a Joystiq reader, Netflix may provide their service to Wii owners. "Imagine that, as an added benefit to DVDs by mail, Netflix offers its members the ability to watch movies & TV episodes instantly on their TV via their Nintendo Wii, choosing from a library of over 12,000 choices.According to the survey, the Netflix service will be enabled through a "Netflix Instant Streaming Disc." The disc would need to be placed in the Wii every time someone wanted to use the Netflix service. Unlike Microsoft, it appears Nintendo will not bundle Netflix into an upcoming firmware. The existence of this survey doesn't necessarily mean Netflix support on Wii is confirmed. However, it does suggest the company has been investigating the possibilities. We're certain Netflix is eager to tap into the millions of Nintendo fans ready to try the streaming movie service.[Thanks, Trey!]Permalink | Email this | Comments

Touch Ruminations: Punch Drunk

In Touch Ruminations, former DS and Wii Fanboy Lead David Hinkle talks about whatever he feels like. He's a jerk like that. This week, he talks about Nintendo of Europe's one-two punch of Punch-Out!! news and what it means to him. The opinions expressed here belong to the author and don't necessarily reflect those of Joystiq, Weblogs Inc. or its affiliates.I actually had to change this week's column at the last second. I had this whole other column planned, then Nintendo of Europe had to go and drop a big old bomb on us earlier today. So now, I'm going to talk about Punch-Out!! and all of the confirmed info and what I think about it. Sorry.

The Hoff has a sense of humor (when paid to)

We don't find the celebrity parodies in Ready 2 Rumble Revolution so much "funny" as "disgusting." But we're changing our tune a bit, thanks to a well-placed endorsement from David Hasselhoff, who is himself a parody (of David Hasselhoff). In this trailer for Aki's boxing game, The Hoff is presented with his pugilistic double. We don't want to spoil the reaction, because we don't want to dull the impact of a fine Hasselhoff performance. But we will say that we appreciate a somewhat disgraced celebrity more when he is willing to make fun of himself. It's a win-win for Hasselhoff -- he gets to improve his image a bit, and make a little cheeseburger money in the process!Permalink | Email this | Comments

10 million accept Wii Play with Wiimote purchase

Nintendo brings word that its Wii Play software has sold over 10 million units in the United States. When combined with the 12.7 million Wiimotes sold individually, that's a whole lot of people waggling together in living rooms and old folks' homes.Nintendo's EVP of Sales & Marketing Cammie Dunaway says, "Even if you believe people are buying Wii Play solely for the controller ..." No, that's not what anybody with more than 512MB under their hood believes. People are buying the controller solely for Wii Play. We're sure it looks lovely to see Wii Play at the top of the NPD's software sales list month after month, but we all know that's based on a fabrication of what's the real star in that product bundle. Of course, all of this is debatable.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joystiq Review: Bit.Trip: Beat (WiiWare)

Bit.Trip: Beat is a harsh mistress. Never before have I played a game this tough, let alone one with such a difficult first level. Still, as hard as it is to climb that quirky, puzzle mountain, reaching its summit was a rewarding experience as I employed my floating bar of justice to stop the unrelenting army of pixels that sought to sneak past me. (If you're looking to skip all of the boring text and enjoy a more visual presentation, check out our handy video companion.)

NoE releases a flurry of Punch-Out!! info

A press release went out that is almost ready to burst at the seams with all of the Punch-Out!! info it contains. First of all, the game will support up to 2 players through Head-to-Head mode, which is pretty self-explanatory. Mac's trainer Doc Louis has been confirmed to make a return, along with a few fighters, including Glass Joe, King Hippo, Don Flaminco, and Von Kaiser, with a total of 13 opponents making their way into the game. We also know the game will feature three different circuits: Minor, Major, and World, presumably each with their own boxers to challenge. Source - NoE product page for Punch-Out!! Imports on VC this Monday: Bomberman '94, Detana!! Twinbee

After five months of total inactivity, during which time it focused on WiiWare, Hudson is returning to the Virtual Console this Monday. Just like the last set of TurboGrafx-16 games so long ago, the two games announced for next week are imports! This means, at the very least, that Hudson has not abandoned the Virtual Console. You may be familiar with Bomberman '94 as the Genesis/Mega Drive Mega Bomberman. The original PC Engine version was only released in Japan. This one features kangaroos that Bomberman can ride (who can also take an explosion for him). Detana!! Twinbee is an absolutely beautiful vertical-scrolling cute-em-up from Konami, in a series rarely seen in North America. Being imports, both games will cost 700 Wii Points. And being Hudson Virtual Console games, we can't be sure they'll actually show up on time.[Via VC Reviews]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
